Hasegawa 1:48 Fw190A-4 (JT91) JG54 'Hubertis von Bonin' FINISHED
Hi,
Started this with Eduard Zoom, but it didn't work out. PE, although great detail, didn't want to work with me on this one, so I scked the build, and I've re-started with a fresh kit (I had chopped off bits of the first kit to get the PE on).
What it should look like colour wise once done: http://falkeeins.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03/hubertus-von-bonin-jg54-ace.html
So, here we go!
The original kit and aftermarket (Master brass barrels for FW190), only bits I'll be re-using from the Eduard PE is the pedals and the map box.
Reference material
JG54 scheme, going to be doing RLM 76, 79, 81, 82.
Cockpit so far, added the oxygen regulator on the right side of the rear wall.
Added the throttle lock lever (next to pilots left knee) a Quickboost resin control column and the PE pedals.
IP
The canopy close/opening gear. Added the canopy jettison lever (red tab) made from a sliver of resin and some Tamiya tape.

Added the Eduard PE seatbelts, came out quite nice.
Put clear varnish on the dials to simulate glass fronts
Glued the fuselage together, started assembly and painting on minor parts like undercarrriage etc.

Thanks Bernard, the Eduard bits really give it a bit of realism, although I think I'll limit photo etched parts to things like seat belts etc. not fill the cockpit with it all.

Re: Hasegawa 1:48 Fw190A-4 (JT91) JG54 'Hubertis von Bonin' FINISHED
Painting this now, I started out with RLM76 undersides, using the Xtracolour Enamel paint. I then masked the wingtips, tail and undercowl to spray the RLM24 yellow.
I stupidly didn't mask the wing completely, so ended up with some yellow overspray!
So, decided to fix the overspray later! Painted the iside of the canopy framing RLM66 Shwarzgrau, then masked the canopy and windshield and tacked them in place. I then completely masked the undersides and sprayed RLM79 Sandgelb overall, followed by RLM82 Dunkelgrun. I will later spray the RLM83 Grun to achieve the pattern on the JG54 aircraft.

Cheers Josh. The JG54 'Grunherz' had quite unusual camo. They tended to do up their own schemes on the Eastern front, favouring two-tone greens and sometimes adding the RLM79 Sandgelb to break it up if necessary.

Thanks Bernard, I'm pleased with how it has come out. I did however, forget to paint the Yellow theatre band around the fuselage!
So. some more work involving masking tape AGAIN!

Paint is practically done now. I need to find some better masking tape though, the stuff I used has left some sticky residue... Any ideas on how to get this off?
Really had a good think with this one on the best sequencing for future builds with regards to masking and not duplicating efforts!

Looks great, as for the masking tape try scrathching it lightly with your finger

Cheers for the tip Josh, I ended up washing the model in warm soapy water and gave it a good scrub with an old toothbrush!
Decals on and after a bit of a drama with the Hasegawa decals, I am pretty happy with it so far. Next up, varnishing and weathering!

Finished today!
Kit; Hasegawa 1/48 FW190A-4
Paints; Humbrol enamels, Xtracolour Enamels
A/M; Master Brass barrels, Eduard Zoom
Weathering; Flory Models dark wash, Windsor and Newton oils
This is the first WWII model I have really gone to town on. I have added little bits that I have only seen others do until this point. I have really enjoyed building this and have found some things that work for me, and some that don't. Controversially, after all the fuss about trying to get the RLM shades JUST RIGHT for this, I used SEA camo! Humbrol 116, 117, 118 over RLM 76 Lichtblau!
The antenna was made from my wife's hair, the insulator from PVA. The hair was painted RLM 66 and the insulator 127 Light Grey.

Thanks Bernard, it's good to have it done, but I've learned a lot along the way and I hope to apply what I have learned to the future builds.
