Italeri/ScaleWorx 1/48 Mirage F1AZ SAAF (72618)

Hi,

No sooner finished 1 model and I'm on to another! This is also part of the Britmodeller 'Close Air Support' group build.

I will be using the Italeri Mirage F.1CT/CR 'gift set' boxing which contains tiny Humbrol acrylic paints and a cheap brush. I'll also be using the ScaleWorx F1AZ conversion set and Verlinden resin Mk.82 bombs.

The Italeri sprues

The ScaleWorx F1AZ conversion set (made by a guy called John Weiderman in South Africa,these are available at the Dutch modelstore Aviation Megastore). The set contains a resin forward fuselage with correct nose (nice and heavy, so no nose ballast needed!), exhaust, ventral strakes, ECM antennae, airscoops, MB Mk 4 seat, IP coaming and IFR probe. It also has two vac-formed canopies and a PhotoEtch (PE) instrument panel (IP). As if that wasn't enough, there is also included a decal sheet by MAV decals for a late 'Low-Vis' F1AZ in SAAF service. MAV decals are made by a South African called Zane and he does some great subjects.

This is what I'm hoping to end up with it looking like (picture from Aviaworld)

Found some more bits I'd bought for this F1AZ;
Pavla intakes and Resin Art wheels with the correct hubs.

Got some work done on this beauty.
Cut off the nose and forward fuselage, quite simple and the resin replacemnt (pretty weighty!) fits like a glove. The exhaust requires a bit of trimming of the kit but is otherwise drop-in perfection.

I've found out that the intake shock cones (the half triangles projecting out of the intakes) by Pavla are the WRONG type for the SAAF F1AZ!
So, luckily they pinged off quite easily and didn't leave any damage. The kit parts ahve been glued on and only a little filler needed to sort them out.

Some more progress here too today.
